Cult Statuses of Women in Pop Culture and Why It Is a Good Thing

When Queen Bey oh-so-quietly dropped her album Beyonce in Dec 2013, I came across a tweet that said "God is a Black Woman". Right at that very moment, with one sentence, I realized how powerful and rightly so Bey was. With the world emphasizing on Feminism like never before, I think this is the right time for Women singers. We had Janice Joplin, we had Grace Slick, we had Joni Mitchell, we had Joan Beaz and we had Stevie Nicks but were they ever considered as widely worship-worthy as say Jimmy page or Paul McCartney? But if they were young and they started careers now, I think they would surpass any man in popularity section.  Its good for the humanity if you ask me. Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Lady gaga and girls like them coming out of their comfort zones, teaching the world a lesson or two is a mighty good thing. How endearing is it when Taylor Swift visits her children fans (lets please set aside kimye drama for a minute, shall we!)? How empowering is it to see her gi...

FREAKY FRIDAY: I WISH THEY’D DRAGGED IT TO SATURDAY TOO

I remember the day “ Freaky Friday ” released in India. I read its full review in this popular newspaper’s additional. I remember thinking how cool the story line was, I was so amazed I wanted to watch it that Friday. But for some reason I couldn’t, and here I am exactly 10 years later writing a review on the movie (I assume you must have figured that it took me 10 long years to watch it!). So, my one line review on the movie still remains the same –“the storyline! Man, is it the coolest!”.  So there is a mom, Tess who is very vexed about her teenage daughter Anna, who is more familiar with detention than studies. Anna on the other hand is an equally vexed daughter, who wants her mom to take her seriously. She camouflages (not so well) her disliking of Tess getting remarried to another man. One fine day, or must I say, one “Freaky Friday” (see that? Word play! Nailed it! ã‚· ), when they are out for dinner with Tess’s boyfriend, there occurs an inexplicable switch, in that th...

Shit! Kristen pulls a Jolie!

Wow! Just when I thought there does exist a fairytale romance in real life, kaboom !, The bomb of reality explodes . Yes, I am referring to the latest news about Kristen Stewart cheating on Robert Pattinson . I am sure you would think I am writing this for the sake of it. But I watched The Breaking Dawn part 1 just this morning and was so into it. And of course, I loved the marriage scene between Edward and Bella and sighed “Wow! Perfect! A match made in heaven”! Is it really that hard to be in a relationship without cheating on each other? I mean, why? Why oh why did Kristen have to pull a Jolie  ? She and Rob were so damn beautiful together. Sure it might work if he decides to put it all behind but it won't be the same, would it? You might ask who am I to comment, but trust me. It is not so easy. Regaining the trust once lost! It isn’t fair. You know. They both were my definition of perfection even though I became a Twilight fanatic very late. I initially liked Ja...

Kidman, Cruise and The Law Of Karma!

When Katie Homes ditched her husband of 8 years Tom Cruise , am sure many of us thought about the same situation that happened with Nicole Kidman and Tom only roles reversed. Well I sure don’t know much or I must say anything about Scientology but I sure do a lot about Karma. I mean of course there is nothing much to understand as the philosophy can be summed up in one line- what goes around, comes back around. Tom’s life is one hell of an example for how Karma works. He left his then wife Kidman for apparently no solid reason. He impregnated her, forgot his duties, cited “irreconcilable differences” as the basis for the divorce and got out of her life. Just like that! Three months later she had a miscarriage and the pathos the woman went through can’t be imagined. Crying for him on a certain TV show, she said she will always love him. And 14 years later here he is going through the same situation again. Only difference being, him on the receiving end. Now nobody is s...

Lost in Translation - Everyone wants to be found!

Acclaimed writer and director Sophia Cappola’s second movie “ Lost in Translation ” is a masterwork of modern times. It emerged as a winner among both audiences and critics alike after its release in 2005. The movie shot entirely in Japan is a sardonic take on the lives of two complete strangers Bob Harris (Murray) and Charlotte ( Scarlett Johansson ). Bob is an actor whose personal and professional lives have become stagnated. With only little hope of reviving he accepts a $ 2 million whiskey commercial deal to be shot in Tokyo. Charlotte is a newlywed who has accompanied her photographer husband to Tokyo where he has a photo shoot assignment. Both Bob and Charlotte suffer the cultural shock silently until they meet each other. They both hit it off instantly and become good friends.  They spill out their life stories to one another. Within the one week of bob’s stay there, Charlotte takes him to her crazy friends who make the whole experience seem adventurous. ...

Prometheus - What a MESS!

First things first, I hadn’t been to this movie on my will! My elder brother Suhi, my elder sister of 15 minutes Susie and I wanted to go to “snow white and the huntsman” in DCR cinemas, Mysore. But god knows why the show got cancelled and since we were already there we thought why not go watch the movie that was shown as an alternative last night. After all it had Charlize Theron as one of the leads. So all I mean to say is that Prometheus is not the kind of movie, any average movie-goer like me would want to watch! Here is why common folk like me and you might not like it- ☞ Because it is beyond our understanding why Westerners are obsessed with making movies either about what happened gazillion years ago (300 BC) or what is going to happen in the distant future (Prometheus)! ☞ Because we worry a lot about today and do not really have time to think about mysterious questions like who created us (that is the subject of this movie), why they created us and how we could...

Groundhog Day Review

So I am just gonna start this blog with a movie review of Bill Murray (my idol)... When actors like Bill Murray and Andy MacDowell come together, you only expect fireworks and magic! You expect it to be path-breaking, out-standing or whatever you may want to call it. Groundhog day is said to be one of the best sci-fi romance movies of all times and is considered to have made Bill Murray what he is today. The story is of Phil, an arrogant weather reporter who lives life on his own terms. He has complete disregard for other people’s feelings and interacts with them only because of his work. One day he is sent to a small town Punxsutawney, for covering a festival of sorts called the groundhog day, where a groundhog (surprise, surprise) is said to predict the coming of spring in the town. Starting from there, weirdly every next day the guy wakes up to is the same day- groundhog day! It keeps repeating until Phil discovers the meaning of love and life.  While everythi...
